Congratulations the the A7FL Championship MVP
Las Vegas Insomniacs Wide Receiver/Safety, #11 Eric “Munchie” Shufford Jr.
The A7FL’s 2024 season ended with a Bang!
For the third straight year, the A7FL Championship came down to major plays and fantastic back-and-forth action in the final seconds. When it was all over, the Las Vegas Insomniacs defeated the Trenton BIC 31-30 at Asbury Park Stadium, winning not only consecutive A7FL Championships but in the process becoming the first West Coast team to win the title in New Jersey, the league’s longtime home stadium and East Coast stronghold. With their victory on Sunday, the Las Vegas Insomniacs now join the Paterson U and Trenton BIC as the only teams in A7FL history to win two A7FL Championships and join the U as the only teams ever to win back-to-back titles.
Despite a valiant effort from the BIC’s Marcellus Pack, Ashante Worthy, Amir Morris, and Sterry Codrington, Eric Shufford Jr cinched the game for the Vegas squad with an interception with 17 seconds remaining to cap off a nail biter that witnessed three lead changes in the games final minute. At the end of the decisive 4th quarter, the Insomniacs used their running game to drive down the field to score, and the BIC retaliated with a drive capped by Sterry Codrington TD. And with the BIC seemingly in command with only 17 seconds left on the clock, Donjae Lyons once again proved why he was a member of the All A7FL’s Decade return team, running back a 3 on 1 throw off 89 yards for the decisive score.
Along with great plays, once again the extra points made the difference: the BIC were thwarted time and again and ended up without any of what would have been their “Championship” points. And while the Insomniacs missed all but one of their extra points, that single point would prove to be the difference maker as they walked away with the 31-30 win, their second consecutive A7FL Championship.
Las Vegas not only proved that their prior Championship was not a fluke, but their win signaled that the A7FL’s realignment from being East Coast focused to a true national league is now fully under way. Congratulations to the Insomniacs (who had to overcome severe travel issues before the game was even played) for taking care of business on the BIC’s home turf, capping off an action-filled roller coaster 10th season for American 7s Football.
