Paterson U Edges Out the Trenton BIC 47-41 In Back-and-Forth Battle for the Championship!

On Sunday, July 18, the A7FL faithful got the Championship game they’d been hoping for, complete with ups, downs, momentum shifts, and of course highlight after highlight. In an all New Jersey matchup that many predicted at the start of the season (despite the addition of 2 expansion divisions), Paterson took on Trenton, the U versus the BIC – 2 league powerhouses facing off for American 7s Football’s biggest prize.

The matchup of the game was at QB, with BIC’s Sterry Codrington going up against the U’s Quatrell Huffin. Huffin won the battle with 180 yards on the ground and 179 yards in the air with 3 throwing and 2 rushing TDs. On the other side of the ball, Codrington was 7 of 12 for 117 yards and 2 touchdowns in the air with 97 yards and 2 TDs on the ground. While the BIC led at halftime, the relentless Paterson attack proved to be too much. After a late TD grab by the U’s Markeith “Dot Boss” Williamson, the BIC were out of time-outs. Once the U had the ball again, the 2020 Champions ran out the clock while the BIC watched their season and their shot at a championship tick away. 

In a notable performance in a losing effort, Matt Riddick had a tremendous game for the BIC with 3 throw-off returns for 156 yards and a touchdown plus another TD reception for a total of 175 combined special team and offensive yards. And Ashante “Hollywood” Worthy made a one-handed TD catch over 2 defenders that will be talked about for years. But in the end, it was Paterson – loaded with talent inside including “Big Rob” Fabien and “Big Mo” Ramada and outside with Joel “Jumpman” Rivera, Kareen “Silky Smooth” Moon and Rookie of the Year candidate Dekyri “VIRAL” Mims – coming out with the 47-41 win, an undefeated season, and the 2021 A7FL Championship.
