LIVE UPDATES

GAME 1

Silk City Animals vs. East Orange Renegades

Our first Game of the Week for the 2023 A7FL playoffs featured the 4-seed Silk City Animals and MVP candidate Quatrell Huffin taking on the 5-seed East Orange Renegades who boast a vaunted defense, specifically a massive defensive line. The Renegades also get their starting quarterback, Corey “CP3” Price, back from injury after he missed most of the regular season.

The Silk City Animals started with the ball and drove right down the field and finished the drive with a Lou Shiesty touchdown on a quick screen to go up 7-0 with 11:15 left in the first. The Renegades only go backwards on their first drive, giving the ball right back to Huff and the Animals. The next Animals drive would grit and grind away at the Renegades defense with a no-huddle attack, but they would still take over 7 minutes of game time. The end result was a touchdown run from Huff to go up 13-0 at the end of the first.

The Renegades started to garner some momentum on their second drive of the game, but a pick-six thrown by CP3 gave the Animals a sudden 21-0 lead with 13:56 left in the second quarter. The Renegades would get the ball down to the Animals’ 6-yard line and CP# would throw a touchdown pass on 4th-and-Goal to get the Renegades on the board with 7:23 left in the quarter. The Animals would continue their offensive dominance by scoring again on a 5-yard touchdown run with 4:23 left until halftime. The Renegades would throw an interception and the Animals would capitalize on the next play on a Huff touchdown pass to Young Bull to go up 34-6 with 2:16 left in the half. To make matters worse for the Renegades, they would fumble on the ensuing throw-off to give the ball right back to the unstoppable-looking Animals offense. The Animals would put up even more points on a Double Zero 5-yard run, putting the Animals up 40-6. With 1:05 left in the half the Renegades were faced with a 4th-and-10 but would fail to convert, giving the ball back to the Animals on the 50-yard line. The Animals would not score on their final drive of the half, but they took a massive 40-6 lead into halftime.

The Renegades would start the second half with the ball and would strike quick with a 48-yard touchdown pass from CP3 to Khaleel Greene only 28 seconds in. The Animals would take the ball down to the Renegades’ 6-yard line, but the Renegades’ defense would come up with a fumble to get the ball back with 12:38 left in the third. The Renegades would face a 4th-and-goal from the 5-yard line, but the Animals defense forced an incompletion to get the ball back with 6:08 left in the quarter. The Animals would score on a Huff 35-yard scramble to go up 47-12 at the end of the third quarter.

The Renegades’ offense took the ball to start the fourth, but failed to convert a 4th-and-15 to give the ball back to the Animals with 11:05 left in the game. The Animals were faced with a 4th-and-15 that they failed to convert, giving the ball back to the Renegades on their own 45-yard line with 8:27 left in the fourth. The Renegades would put up another touchdown from CP3 on a 25-yard scamper, but they would still be down 47-18 with 3:12 left in the game. The Animals would try to ice out the rest of the clock, but an interception by the Renegades and a 7-yard rushing touchdown by Khaleel Greene would window dress the final score. The Animals would move on to the second round of the A7FL playoffs to face either the Baltimore Watchmen or the Trenton BIC. Final: Silk City Animals 47 East Orange Renegades 18

GAME 2

Paterson U vs. Rahway Shnow Tribe

The 3-seed Paterson U took on the 6-seed Rahway Shnow Tribe in our second Game of the Week of the 2023 A7FL Playoffs.

The U would start with the ball on the Shnow Tribe’s 47-yard line, but they would go three-and-out to give the ball to the Shnow Tribe with 12:54 left in the first. The Shnow Tribe would take up over eight minutes on their first drive and would score on a 5-yard touchdown run from Marcel Chapman to go up 6-0 with 4:44 left in the first. The U would go three-and-out again, and the Shnow Tribe would get the ball back with 1:16 left in the quarter. The first would end with the Renegades’ offense on their own 34-yard line.

The Shnow Tribe would run the ball with great efficiency on this drive, but a failed 3rd-and-8 conversion would force the Shnow Tribe to throw-off to the U with 10:27 left in the second. The U would start their drive on their own 20-yard line, and their offense would gain momentum on this drive en route to an 11-yard Money Mayweather touchdown run to take a 7-6 lead with 3:39 left in the half. The U’s defense would hold firm on the following Shnow Tribe possession and the U would get the ball on their own 15-yard line with 1:51 left in the half. They would score on a Kareen Moon rushing touchdown to go up 14-6 heading into halftime.

The Shnow Tribe would start the second half with the ball on their own 19-yard line and they would methodically drive down the field but would throw an interception to Hard Body on 4th-and goal with 6:30 left in the third to give the ball back to the U. Shortly after, Carlos Croslin would rush for a 75-yard touchdown to go up 21-6 with 4:17 left in the third. The Shnow Tribe would go three-and-out and throw-off back to the U with 1:41 left in the third. The quarter would end with the U’s offense on their own 36-yard line.

The Shnow Tribe defense would force a throw-off and would give the ball back to their offense with 12:25 left in the fourth. Suge Knight would score on a 60-yard touchdown to bring the score to 21-12, but the U would get a massive play from Henry Smith on a 3-on-1 return for a touchdown moments later, giving the U a 27-12 lead with 11:51 left in the game. The Renegades would drive the ball into U territory, but a failed conversion on 4th-and-3 would end the Shnow Tribe drive and give the U the ball on their own 30-yard line with 4:09 left. The U would gash their way through the Shnow Tribe’s defense with their rushing attack and would score on a Moon pass to Saadiq Pitts for a dagger of a touchdown. The U would advance to the second round and are set to face the Trenton BIC next week. Final: Paterson U 33 Rahway Shnow Tribe 12

Our games of the week start us in the Northeast, as the East Orange Renegades and Silk City Animals square off in a rematch of a defensive showdown early in the 2023 campaign.

With Trey Baskerville having a DPOY season, will he be enough to stop Quatrell Huffin and the Animals from moving on to face the Baltimore Watchmen in the second round?

At 4pm, Huffin’s former team, the Paterson U, walk in as the 3 seed, but face a Rahway Shnow Tribe team looking to play spoiler.

Can Jonathan Keel and 2022 DPOY Issac Negron get the upset against Negron’s former team, or will Kareen Moon and Carlos Croslin lead the Paterson U one step closer to a fifth straight A7FL Championship appearance?
