Week 2 Recap – A7FL 2020 Back in Motion Tournament Presented by Salus

Paterson U 47 – BIC 14

This game was all U all the way. Whenever BIC showed signs of a heartbeat, Paterson found a way to pull the plug quickly. And missing their starting QB, BIC just could not stop the multidimensional talent that the U puts on the field week in and week out.

Paterson U QB Quatrell “Huff” Huffin set the tone early with his ability to make strong accurate throws seemingly at will.  The U is stocked with playmakers and Huff showed once again that he’s an elite talent and can spread the ball around effectively. The U’s high powered wideouts Joel “Jumpman” Rivera and Kareen “SilkySmoove” Moon both had their typical big games, as did Pat “Smoke” Cobourne.

Facing this level of talent, the BIC knew going in they had their work cut out for them especially after QB Jelen Crooms was suspended and unable to play following a postgame altercation last week. Jaqueiss Gerald was thrust into action as a replacement, but it turned out to be a tough night against a stifling Paterson defense.

Early on, it was evident that BIC was out of rhythm with costly penalties and miscommunications.  That ineffective play led them to trail 33-0 by late in the third quarter when Gerald found a bit of a groove and led his team to 2 quick touchdowns. However it was too little too late as the U controlled the action from that point forward, eventually getting the win 47-14. It was clearly too little, too late, but Gerald showed he’s a capable QB once he got comfortable, especially throwing to Troi “Mr. Incredible” Smith who made some big grabs.

In the 2020 tournament format, these teams will meet again next week. On paper, it looks to be another U win, but BIC will bring its winning tradition and team pride. With one start under his belt, perhaps quarterback Gerald can lead his team and show his skills for all 4 quarters. Or perhaps the BIC (0-2) will have another surprise in store for the U (2-0) who will look to keep things rolling smoothly and use back-to-back wins against the BIC to punch their ticket to the 2020 A7FL Championship game. Tune in next Sunday to find out!

Hawks 33 – Renegades 25

As predicted, this game was a dogfight, with the outcome up for grabs until the final whistle. In the end, the Hawks kept their momentum rolling after their last second win last week, while the Renegades suffered yet another disappointment.

In this back and forth matchup, Cory “The Iceman” Hammond came out with guns blazing. He showed throughout the night that he still has the “it” factor, making some incredible throws that put his Renegades squad in position to win (and even delivering a 50-yard TD scamper). After the first half, the Renegades looked like the team to beat, especially with Dondre “Clowney 2.0” Haynes making big plays in all 3 phases of the game, including both an interception and a touchdown.

New Hawks QB Corey “CP3” Price was held in check most of the night by the Renegades defense. With their focus on CP3, someone else on the Hawks needed to step up, So from the backfield Mike “Sweetness” Liberti made his presence known by chewing up yards on a 4th quarter drive. His rushing touchdown with 6:21 left in the 4th quarter put the Hawks up for good 26-25. Meanwhile Khaleel “MambaStackz” Greene answered the call all night long, making big play after big play and ultimately catching a CP3 touchdown pass with 1:52 remaining to seal the win for the Hawks.

With a rematch next week, the Renegades (0-2) seek immediate revenge, while CP3 and the Hawks (2-0) are looking to remain undefeated in their bid for a Championship.
