In a highly anticipated rematch of the 2021 title game, the battle between the Trenton BIC and the Paterson U came down to one knee, a thin white line on the turf and just two points. And in the end, the BIC took home the crown 32-30 in a hard-fought game that put both teams to the test.

After surviving the regular season and playoffs undefeated, the Trenton BIC returned to Asbury Park Stadium on Sunday to do the one thing they were unable to do during their 2021 campaign: defeat the Paterson U with everything on the line. Using a combination of youth and experience, this BIC squad was undefeated going into the Championship, and they relished the chance to put a cherry on top of their perfect season.

The back-to-back Champions from the U came into Sunday’s game with a very different perspective than they were used to – that of an underdog. They suffered their first loss in the last three seasons when they fell to BIC early in the spring and came into the game with something to prove as a second loss to Trenton in the Northeastern Division Championship game gave notice that perhaps their time had passed.

While the U got the ball first, the BIC put the first points on the board with a 60-yard run from QB and MVP candidate Sterry Codrington. Paterson would go nearly two full quarters without a score, but after a seven-minute plus drive, back-to-back A7FL MVP Quatrelle Huffin showed why he is still one of the best in the game, running it into the endzone on a QB keeper to make it 13-6.

The BIC would take a 20-12 lead into halftime, but in the third quarter the defending champions would send a slimmed-down but still powerful Donnel “Ice Cream Truck” Hubbard over from the 5-yard line to tighten the score to 20-18 heading into the final frame.

After a 24-yard TD reception by Paterson’s Anthony “Dimar” DiMarsico put the U on top 24-20, the BIC responded with Codrington’s legs, Kason Campbell’s pass catching and an emphatic TD from Courage Mozie. The former A7FL MVP and the leader of BIC’s shocking 2016 championship, Mozie’s 12-yard romp put the BIC on top to stay.

While both offenses were cooking all afternoon, the BIC defense – on the backs of a Tauheem Duren fumble return for a touchdown and Alex Verardi’s MVP-caliber day with 11 tackles including 4 sacks, kept the Trenton squad in the lead.

But the U showed the heart of a champion, with Kareen Moon, in for an injured Quatrelle Huff, running the ball into the endzone to make the score 32-30 with 1:54 remaining. The U then attempted a 2-point conversion to send the game into overtime. But after making a catch and appearing to stretch into the endzone for the score, Dekyri Mims’ heroics were reversed after videotape review showed his knee was down before he crossed the goal line, icing the game and delivering the 2022 Championship to the BIC 32-30.

And so the Trenton BIC are American 7s Football League’s 2022 Champions capping their undefeated season with a storybook finish. And while Paterson U came close, the loss may have been the last gasp for the most dominant dynasty in the league’s eight-year history.
