As announced on the 3-on-1 podcast by Matt Ryan, Rob Fabien, and Cory Hammond, the A7FL 2022 Season award winners came from the two teams that dominated headlines and on the field and were also opponents in the A7FL 2022 Championship Game.
The 2022 A7FL Season is quickly fading into our rearview mirror, but before we can focus on 2023, we must first celebrate the players who stood out the most during the eighth American 7s Football League campaign.
Beginning with the league’s most significant honor, Sterry Codrington Jr’s leadership, poise, and performance in his second season made him the clear choice as this year’s Most Valuable Player.
Codrington, his cousin, and fellow Trenton BIC star, Ashante Worthy, ran neck and neck for this honor and the offensive player of the year honor. His output, coupled with the leadership the former defensive back turned Quarterback showed throughout his second season, solidified the decision for the selection committee, along with the fan balloting.
Ashante Worthy did not walk away empty-handed, as the player considered to be the most dynamic player in spring football was named the 2022 A7FL Offensive Player Of The Year.
Whenever Worthy had the ball in his hands, the third-year player made opposing defenders regret stepping onto the field with his insane athleticism and understanding of the sport.
Another BIC player would take home annual honors this year, but on the other side of the ball, defensive lineman Alex Verardi would be named the 2022 Rookie Of The Year.
Stepping into the league in 2022, Verardi had made a name for himself on the fields of New Jersey’s High Schools and quickly made a name for himself in the A7FL as the anchor to a voracious BIC defense.
The young defensive end was so prodigious in the 2022 A7FL Championship Game that Verardi would be handed co-MVP honors with Quarterback Sterry Codrington.
And while the Paterson U did not win their fourth championship in five tries, the team that held the fate of the A7FL in their hands for the better part of a decade saw one of their own get honored for his on-field work in 2022, as Issac Negron would be named Defensive Player Of The Year.
Negron, a veteran nurtured in the Paterson style of football, would be a force to be reckoned with in 2022, living up to his “I-Sack” nickname.
A7FL Championship football game between Paterson U and Trenton BIC, held at Asbury Park High School, Asbury Park, NJ. Sunday, July 10, 2022.
Make sure to listen to Matt, Cory, and Rob weekly as they host guests from around the league on the A7FL 3-On-1 Podcast, and get ready for the 2023 season!
