TRENTON BIC VS PATERSON U – 4:00 PM ET

Preview by A7FL Announcer and Host of the 3-On-1 Podcast, Matt Ryan

When you talk about a sports rivalry, the immediate inclination is to make it feel as if it were an epic clash of titans.

They evoke the imagery of Vikings, battlefields, soaring horns, and crushing hits, as the writer lionizes the courage and animus that is fuel for the Trenton BIC and the Paterson U heading into this Sunday at 4PM ET.

But, I’ve done that before.

And sure, it’s the two teams who’ve combined appeared in all but three A7FL Championships and won all but four… two of them against each other.

BIC MERCH HERE

You can also talk about how the BIC and the U were the final two teams to battle for the Town Beef (predecessor to the A7FL) title ten years ago, or how both teams feature players who would be the first six classes of the A7FL Hall of Fame, players like Ashante Worthy and Sterry Codrington, who since Codrington’s rookie season in 2021 have only lost to the Paterson U on an A7FL field.

There’s also Quatrell Huffin, the reigning MVP who returned to the Paterson U in 2024 after trying to build something across town with the Animals, while possibly denying himself and the U of redeeming themselves after losing to the BIC in the 2022 Championship.

Then… you gotta talk about Vegas and Tampa

PATERSON U MERCH HERE

For Paterson and Trenton this is the biggest game on their regular season schedule, but a few time zones away, the Las Vegas Insomniacs are watching this game with the confidence that no matter what team comes out of the east, they’ll crush them this July.

And for the Tampa NightCrawlers, who in the last two seasons were one play away from victory in the Elite Eight and then the championship and an offense that has scored over 124 points in two games… despite only playing seven quarters of football.

How do you think Huff, Sterry, Ashante, or anyone who will stand on either sideline this Sunday at 4 pm feel when they realize that the league they helped create, build, and sacrifice for has a champion that ain’t them?

Neither of them had the chance to fight to prove that they were the best team in the league in last seasons championship.

It would be safe to say that both teams refuse to allow that to happen again and it would take the other or an act of God to stop them.

Two teams that seem so similar, but feel so different.

The U showcase flash and sizzle whenever Huff is behind center, playing the position of Quarterback with the finest of an elite point guard and an awkward complexity that could define other artisans such as Miles Davis.

Despite his ability to develop a play in the huddle, Huff’s ability to improvise at the level of a Larry David or the aforementioned Miles Davis, makes him a must-watch player anytime he takes the field.

In stark contrast is Codrington, who despite his speed and experience as a member of the secondary, utilizes his offensive line to give his receivers ample opportunity to score.

Replacing 2016 champion Corey Price following an injury, then taking the BIC to the 2022 championship game, and following that up by winning it all, Codrington would utilize his world-class speed to help the BIC become one of the must-see teams in all of football.

Yet in 2023, Codrington would instead make the shift to a more pass-first quarterback and becoming one of the most accurate passers in the league and following that same template in 2024 have the BIC riding high in points scored and in the Eastern Conference.

Throw in Baltimore exports Nick Mays and Marcellus Pack, both of whom have been game changers for Paterson (Mays) and Trenton (Pack), and you have teams that feature some of the best skill players not just in the league, but all of football.

Don’t believe me?

Well, this Sunday at 4 pm sit down, grab some snacks, grab a drink, and enjoy one of the best football games you’ll see all year.

If I’m wrong, if this game doesn’t live up to the hype. If it doesn’t make you feel something special.

I’ll walk away and never talk to you again.

Fair?
